Challenging the Lottery to cough up for our Arboricultural Heritage!
Sherwood Forest entered the contest for £50 million from the Big Lottery Fund to help transform and enhance the historic landscape considered to be nearest we have to England's remnant Ancient 'Rain' Forest. Find out more at www.robinhood.co.uk
The Plan - Build a brand new, visitor complex by March 2011 (with a tree-top viewing platform!) - Create over 150 miles of new walking, cycling and horse riding paths - Transform 300 hectares of farmland (over 400 football pitches!) into a beautiful mosaic of habitats
Why - Sherwood Forest contains the oldest collection of ancient oak trees in Europe - Parts of the Forest habitat are rarer than the tropical rainforst - Thousands of people across the region will have the chance to take part in transforming existing agricultural land into new woodland and heathland - It's home to a vast array of wildlife from spiders and badgers, to deer and nightjars - We need to protect Sherwood Forest for future generations
Sherwood Forest is no longer the majestic expanse of woods and heatland that it once was. Industrialisation and the march of time have taken their toll on the ancient greenwood that Robin Hood called home. But that is set to change ...
Sherwood: the Living Legend will more than double the core size of the ancient oak forest; provide environmentally friendly visitor facilities; create one fo the biggest walking, cycling and horse riding networks in Europe and help local communities celebrate and share their connections to Sherwood's nature, history and lengends.
Most importantly, our project will protect the fragile ecology of one of the world's most famous forests and its ancient oak trees, so it can be enjoyed by future generations....
