Hunting for specimens to add to the Woodland Trusts Ancient Tree Hunt database continues through the winter. This five year Projects search to record all of britains ancient trees depends on the enthusiasm of the general public, as well as tree professionals to submit their discoveries to the website. So a recent autumnal rush of natural history TV programmes describing the british landscape as it prepares for winter has kept the native natural environment in the public consciousness. Several programmes featured ancient trees and ancient woodland, and explained the rich biodiversity they sustain.
At the Woodland Trust, efforts to keep the public interested in recording ancient trees continue. The project has come to the attention of out door magazines, and it is hoped articles on incorporating ancient tree hunting into rambling, trail walking and camping expeditions will soon start to appear, in time for the great public rush to get out doors again when spring arrives. Rasing and maintaining enthusiasm over the winter is essential, but so ensuring accuracy.
For the Ancient Tree Hunt to become a complete and relible database of all ancient, veteran and notable trees, not only do the trees have to be correctly entered via the website, but entries on the database must be as robust as possible. Ancient tree recorders may be tree novices, so identification and step-by-step measurement instructions are avilable from me from the website, www.ancienttreehunt.org.uk. Additional conformation comes with the checking of each and every record by growing a team of official verfiers.
All volunteers, and they are trained by the woodland trust to check photos and stories are suitable for publication before the records are allowed to go live onto the website. Verifiers also check for duplicate records, information that looks wrong-such as impossible girth measurements - and wrong species identification. information can be checked with the recorder of the tree and amended if necessary....
